Children’s Day: FG Reiterates Commitment to Strengthening Inclusive Child Protection Policies

Abuja, May 28, 2026 — The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening inclusive policies that safeguard the rights and welfare of Nigerian children, while ensuring equal opportunities regardless of gender, disability, or social background.

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, gave the assurance in Abuja during the Annual Children’s Carnival held at Monoliza Amusement Park, Garki, as part of activities marking the 2026 National Children’s Day celebration.

The event, themed “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child,” brought together children from various schools, orphanages, and special education centres, including institutions for children with hearing and visual impairments.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim said the government remains focused on strengthening both legal and social protection systems to help children reach their full potential and compete effectively on a global scale.

She described Nigerian children as valuable to national development, adding that they represent the country’s future and deserve continuous encouragement and support.

According to her, the week-long programme for Children’s Day reflects ongoing reforms aimed at improving child welfare, protection, and inclusion across the country.

She noted that the introduction of the National Care Policy marks a significant step toward aligning Nigeria’s child protection framework with global standards.

The minister emphasised that inclusivity must begin early in life, encouraging children to build relationships based on mutual respect and cooperation.

She also stated that children have a role to play in nation-building by being disciplined, responsible, and patriotic in their conduct.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim praised the creativity, resilience, and achievements of Nigerian children in areas such as sports, arts, and technology, describing them as ambassadors of national pride.

She further revealed that over 1,000 children from different backgrounds, including orphanages and special needs institutions, were hosted by the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, at the Presidential Villa as part of the celebration activities.

The minister commended President Bola Tinubu for prioritising social development initiatives and declaring 2026 as the “Year of Family and Social Development.”

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Uko Bada, commended the successful organisation of the event and reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to policies that promote child welfare and inclusion.

Some of the participating children expressed appreciation to the government for celebrating them and creating platforms that support their development.

An eight-year-old pupil, Zion Mantim, called on authorities to strengthen the protection of children in schools and communities against violence and abuse.

A 10-year-old pupil, Zoe Dala, also urged the government to continue investing in education and creating opportunities that enable children to achieve their dreams.

The celebration featured a range of activities including games, cultural performances, music, arts and crafts, chess competitions, tie-and-dye training, health outreach, and distribution of gifts to children.
