Eid traders advise caution, prudent spending amid slow ram sales and rising costs

Suleja, May 27, 2026 — Ram and poultry traders in Suleja, Niger State have advised residents celebrating Eid-el-Kabir to stay safe, avoid overcrowded recreational centres, and spend responsibly as the high cost of livestock continues to reduce customer turnout.

The Secretary of the Rams Sellers Association, Kwamba Zone, Suleja, Muhammad Ibrahim, encouraged families to mark the celebration in a calm and home-based environment, noting that the essence of the festival is best expressed with loved ones.

He said in an interview that residents should avoid unnecessary movement during the festive period and prioritise their safety.

“I advise everyone to stay at home and celebrate with their families. Observing Salah with family is very important,” he said.

Ibrahim also warned against visiting unsafe or overcrowded locations, stressing the importance of personal security during the celebrations.

“People should avoid places that could put their lives at risk. Safety should come first,” he added.

Another trader and association member, Alhaji Harun Musa, noted that the sharp increase in ram prices had significantly affected sales, as many households now prefer to rear their own animals.

He explained that prices currently range from about N60,000 for smaller rams to as high as N1.5 million depending on size and quality.

Despite the slowdown, Musa said sales had slightly improved as the celebration progressed, with many buyers still fulfilling the religious obligation despite economic pressures.

He added that he stocked about 30 rams ahead of the season but had only a few left by Wednesday, expressing confidence that he would sell out before the end of the festivities.

A poultry seller, Mr Solomon Ogunbiyi, also said chicken sales had been lower than expected as many residents opted for rams despite their high cost.

He attributed the trend to economic challenges that have forced many households to cut back on spending.

Ogunbiyi urged Nigerians to avoid financial strain during the celebration and to spend within their means.

“People should manage their resources wisely, especially with rising household and school expenses, instead of putting themselves under unnecessary pressure,” he said.

He further called on wealthier individuals to support less privileged families during the festive period so they can also celebrate meaningfully.

On security, Ogunbiyi urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid crowded areas, while appealing to government to intensify efforts to address insecurity across the country.

He added that celebrants should remain cautious and security-conscious throughout the holiday period.
