FRSC reports nine fatalities, 17 injured in Katsina highway accident

Nine people have lost their lives while 17 others sustained injuries in a road crash involving a commercial bus and a trailer along the Kankia–Katsina highway.

The confirmation was contained in a statement issued in Katsina by the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shamsudeen Babajo.

According to him, the accident occurred at Kwanar Gidan Mutum Daya around 8:03 p.m. on Saturday and involved a Toyota Hummer bus and a trailer, with 26 persons affected.

Babajo said rescue operatives from the Kankia Unit Command responded to a distress call and arrived at the scene within 23 minutes, working alongside other emergency responders to evacuate victims.

He explained that 17 passengers suffered various degrees of injuries, including fractures, broken limbs and deep cuts, while nine others died as a result of the impact.

He further disclosed that four of the deceased were burnt beyond recognition after the bus reportedly went up in flames shortly after the collision.

All injured victims were taken to General Hospital Kankia for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the hospital mortuary.

He added that rescue teams also worked to clear the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow along the busy highway.

The FRSC Sector Commander expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

He also confirmed that preliminary investigations have begun to determine the cause of the crash.

Motorists were urged to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and other forms of reckless driving, particularly during the busy Eid-el-Kabir travel period.

The corps further advised drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on long-distance journeys, while passengers were encouraged to speak up against unsafe driving behaviour.

The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to improving road safety through sustained patrols, public education campaigns and strict enforcement of traffic regulations across Katsina State.
