Archbishop Aladekugbe Urges Politicians to Put National Security Above Electoral Victory

The Archbishop of Ibadan Province and Bishop of Ibadan North Anglican Diocese, Most Rev. Williams Aladekugbe, has urged political leaders to place greater attention on tackling insecurity instead of concentrating mainly on election victories.

Speaking during an interview in Ibadan on Monday, Aladekugbe warned that the country’s worsening security situation could become even more dangerous if urgent action is not taken.

He expressed concern over the rising cases of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across Nigeria, saying many citizens have been pushed to their limits by persistent violence and fear.

According to him, political actors appear more focused on electoral campaigns and power struggles than on finding lasting solutions to insecurity and protecting lives.

The cleric lamented what he described as the growing disregard for human life in the country, noting that many young people have become discouraged by the situation.

He questioned why stronger international support had not been sought if local authorities were struggling to contain the security crisis, stressing that the continued loss of lives should not be ignored.

Aladekugbe also criticised what he called misplaced priorities among some politicians, saying public celebrations and rallies continue despite the pain and hardship being experienced by many Nigerians.

He noted that insecurity has forced many families to relocate, weakened national unity, discouraged investors and contributed to the migration of skilled citizens abroad.

The archbishop further expressed concern over the killing of security personnel, including soldiers and police officers, adding that the nation’s security system appears compromised by infiltration and internal weaknesses.

He prayed for divine guidance for political leaders, especially during the Pentecost season, asking that they develop a renewed commitment to protecting citizens and promoting peace.

Despite the nation’s challenges, Aladekugbe encouraged Nigerians, particularly Christians, to remain grateful and steadfast in faith amid difficult circumstances.
