Nigeria and the United States have taken a new step in deepening military collaboration with the launch of Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups aimed at strengthening responses to terrorism and regional instability.
The development was disclosed in Abuja through a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba.
According to him, the initiative established under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap is designed to build institutional capacity and enhance coordinated efforts in addressing evolving security threats.
Leading the U.S. delegation, Mr. Cate Dave noted that the working groups would improve strategic planning and contribute to efforts to prevent terrorist groups from finding safe havens. He highlighted the role of strong institutions in delivering effective counterterrorism strategies.
Similarly, the head of the Nigerian delegation, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, described the partnership as essential for confronting security challenges within Nigeria and across the region. He explained that the collaboration would prioritise boosting the operational strength of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and improving their ability to respond swiftly to threats.
He added that the effort is expected to support broader goals of peace and stability nationwide.
Both delegations stressed the importance of sustained cooperation, accountability, and measurable results in ensuring the success of the initiative and strengthening regional security outcomes.
