LASTMA intensifies safety campaign to reduce accidents involving dispatch riders

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has stepped up measures aimed at reducing road crashes involving dispatch riders on major highways across the state.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this during an interview in Lagos, noting that the agency is strengthening both enforcement and safety education targeted at courier operators and riders.

He said the authority has already engaged union representatives of dispatch riders as part of ongoing efforts to improve compliance with traffic regulations and reduce avoidable accidents.

According to him, plans are underway to hold a broader stakeholder meeting with courier companies and riders to reinforce adherence to safety standards.

The discussions, he explained, will emphasise the importance of protecting both road users and the riders themselves, who are often exposed to high-risk conditions on highways.

Bakare-Oki reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government to safeguarding lives and property through improved traffic management systems.

He added that the proposed engagement will bring together key stakeholders, including unions and service providers, to address operational challenges and strengthen compliance with road safety laws.

The LASTMA boss also highlighted the agency’s school-based traffic awareness programme, which aims to educate young people on road safety and responsible behaviour.

He noted that the initiative is designed to instill early discipline in road use, contributing to safer streets across the state.

According to him, the programme has already reached nearly 40 percent of schools in Lagos between January and March, as part of ongoing efforts to deepen safety awareness among students.

He reiterated that LASTMA remains focused on reducing traffic incidents through continuous education, monitoring, and stakeholder collaboration.
