New ECOWAS headquarters inaugurated as China completes handover

A newly completed headquarters complex for the ECOWAS has been delivered in Abuja, marking a significant addition to the region’s institutional infrastructure.

Chinese officials formally transferred the facility to the ECOWAS Commission during a ceremony held in Nigeria’s capital on April 28.

Situated along Airport Road, roughly 15 kilometres from the city centre, the expansive development covers more than 70,000 square metres, with over 36,000 square metres of built-up space.

The site features a main office block, a conference centre, and supporting infrastructure such as internal roadways, utility systems, open public spaces, parking zones, and even a helipad—creating a fully integrated administrative and event hub.

The project was financed and executed by the Chinese government as part of its broader cooperation framework with West Africa.

Plans for the headquarters date back to 2015, when the proposal was introduced during a joint economic and trade meeting between both sides. Formal agreements confirming support were signed in 2018, paving the way for construction, which began in late 2021 and concluded in December 2025.

Built to meet international standards, the complex reflects modern architectural practices, emphasizing durability, safety, and efficient use of space. Its design places the office tower and conference hall at the core, arranged in sweeping curves that symbolically represent unity and coordination across the region.

The principal office structure spans about 29,800 square metres and rises up to 11 floors at its highest point, with slightly lower wings on either side. Inside, it accommodates offices, meeting spaces, and essential amenities such as a data centre, training facilities, healthcare services, childcare areas, a fitness centre, a library, and dining sections.

The new complex is expected to strengthen administrative operations and support regional collaboration efforts across West Africa.
