The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has advised Nigerians in the country to stay cautious and alert amid planned protests targeting foreign nationals.
NICASA President-General, Frank Onyekwelu, issued the advisory on Friday during an interview in Abuja.
He explained that the warning was aimed at Nigerians living in Gauteng Province, where demonstrations are expected to take place between April 27 and April 29.
Onyekwelu noted that the history and underlying tensions associated with such protests make it important for residents to take preventive steps.
He urged Nigerians to limit non-essential movement, especially around identified protest areas and busy city centres.
Business owners were also encouraged to consider temporarily shutting down operations during the period to protect lives and property.
He further cautioned against visiting protest routes or crowded locations where tensions could escalate.
According to him, residents should remain indoors as much as possible, stay informed through reliable news channels, and follow updates from NICASA and relevant authorities.
Onyekwelu also advised maintaining regular communication with family members and community leaders, while promptly reporting any suspicious activities.
He stressed the importance of obeying local laws, avoiding confrontations, and cooperating fully with security agencies.
He reassured that NICASA would continue to monitor developments closely and engage with stakeholders to ensure the safety of Nigerians.
The association pledged to provide timely updates as the situation evolves, urging members to act responsibly and prioritise their safety at all times.
