Airtel Nigeria has announced a temporary halt to its airtime and data credit services following the introduction of a new regulatory framework by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
The company’s Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Lagos, explaining that the decision was taken to ensure compliance with the updated rules.
The newly introduced Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025, establishes fresh licensing and compliance requirements for firms offering digital credit and similar services in Nigeria.
Adeshina noted that the suspended services previously enabled eligible prepaid subscribers to borrow airtime or data, with repayment made during subsequent recharges.
Despite the suspension, he assured customers that regular airtime and data purchases would continue without disruption through Airtel’s existing platforms.
He further clarified that the temporary measure is not expected to significantly affect the company’s overall service delivery nationwide.
Describing the move as necessary, Adeshina said it reflects the company’s commitment to meeting regulatory standards while maintaining transparency and protecting consumers.
He added that Airtel Nigeria would provide further updates as soon as there are developments regarding the reinstatement of the affected services.
