Man Jailed 36 Months for House Breaking, Theft of Electrical Materials in Jos

An Area Court in Jos on Tuesday sentenced one Unity Meju to 36 months imprisonment for house breaking and stealing electrical wires and sockets valued at N780,000.

The presiding Judge, Irene Pati, handed down the sentence after the defendant pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court, however, gave the convict the option of paying a N50,000 fine or serving 12 months imprisonment for house breaking, as well as an option of N70,000 fine for the theft offence.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, informed the court that the matter was reported at the “A” Division Police Station on Jan. 4 by the complainant, Mrs. Martha John.

According to the prosecution, the defendant unlawfully entered the complainant’s residence and stole electrical wires and sockets worth N780,000.

Gokwat added that during police investigation, the accused confessed to committing the offence.

The prosecutor noted that the offences contravened the Plateau State Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria, 2017.
