36 Years On, NANPF Emphasises Players’ Safety And Welfare In Honour Of Okwaraji

The National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF) used the occasion of Samuel Okwaraji’s 36th memorial to affirm its unwavering dedication to enhancing the welfare and safety of players across Nigeria. The event, held on August 13, 2025, served not just as a tribute, but as a call to action for lasting reform.

President of NANPF, Sunday Abe, emphasized that Okwaraji’s tragic passing he collapsed and died during an international match in 1989 serves as a stark reminder of why player protection must remain paramount . Abe stated:

“Samuel Okwaraji made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country. His memory reminds us why footballers’ health and safety must be top priority. Beyond tributes, we are taking action by improving conditions for players at all levels”.

Highlighting past efforts, Abe recalled NANPF’s organization of the Sam Okwaraji U-15 Tournament and accompanying lectures in Owerri in 2015 and 2016 initiatives that were unfortunately interrupted by family-related difficulties but assured attendees of plans to revive them, possibly by 2026 .

The association has also been pressing stakeholders to bolster health screenings, emergency responses, and insurance coverage for footballers. Abe declared, “Player welfare is not a privilege, it is a right… Every player deserves to feel safe on the pitch. We honour Okwaraji best by making lasting reforms, not just speeches”

Born in 1963, Samuel Okwaraji tragically died at just 25 years old during a FIFA World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Angola in Lagos his death stunned the nation and exposed glaring gaps in on-field medical preparedness.
