The leadership of the 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Katsina has reaffirmed its dedication to the welfare and wellbeing of widows and children of fallen personnel, pledging sustained institutional support.
The Brigade Commander, Brig.-Gen. Ishaya Ibrahim, gave the assurance while hosting widows of deceased soldiers residing at Natsinta Cantonment, Katsina, during a courtesy visit on Friday.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Capt. Abayomi Adisa, the commander described the sacrifices of the fallen troops as invaluable and deserving of lasting recognition.
He stressed that the brigade remained committed to prioritising the needs of the families left behind, assuring them of continuous welfare interventions and support programmes.
According to him, deliberate steps were being taken to enhance the quality of life of the widows and secure a better future for their children, in line with the Nigerian Army’s policy of honouring its fallen heroes.
Ibrahim further reiterated the Army’s determination to remain steadfast in supporting bereaved families, noting that their sacrifices serve as motivation and inspiration to serving personnel.
He added that the engagement formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen relationships between the military and families of deceased soldiers, while also promoting trust, unity and shared understanding.
Adisa explained that the visit provided an opportunity for the widows to express their welfare concerns and deepen existing bonds with the military formation.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Mrs Hauwa Mohammed appealed for the continuation and expansion of welfare programmes designed to support widows and their children.
She emphasised that beyond raising their children responsibly, the widows relied heavily on institutional assistance, particularly in education, healthcare and general wellbeing.
Mohammed also commended the leadership of the Nigerian Army under the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for sustaining various welfare initiatives, especially the Education Sponsorship Programme, which she described as crucial in easing their burdens.
She concluded by expressing heartfelt appreciation to the Army for standing by the families of fallen heroes, noting that the consistent support has helped restore hope, stability and resilience in the face of their loss.
