LPPC Warns Lawyers Against Use of ‘Blue Silk’ Title

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has warned legal practitioners against the use of the title “Blue Silk,” stating that it is not recognised under Nigerian law and is distinct from the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The warning was contained in a statement signed by Mr. Kabir Akanbi, Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, and issued on Thursday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the LPPC’s attention was drawn to the introduction and recent use of the purported designation “Blue Silk” within certain quarters of the legal community.

“The LPPC has resolved to take appropriate steps in line with its statutory mandate to preserve the integrity of the legal profession and the sanctity of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria,” the statement read.

It reaffirmed that the SAN rank remains the highest mark of professional distinction for legal practitioners in Nigeria and stressed that the committee is committed to maintaining its integrity, prestige and exclusivity.

The LPPC warned that the introduction, conferment or use of the “Blue Silk” title has no statutory backing and does not emanate from the committee or any authority recognised under the Legal Practitioners Act.

“Members of the legal profession and the general public are hereby advised to take note,” it stated.

The committee further noted that lawyers involved in creating such purported ranks, as well as those presenting or parading themselves as “Blue Silks,” could be engaging in conduct that may violate the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2023.
