President Bola Tinubu has announced that Nigeria and Türkiye have reached an understanding to speed up cooperation in key sectors including trade, energy and defence, with the aim of creating jobs, attracting investment and improving economic outcomes for both nations.
The President made this known on Tuesday through a post on his official X account amid his State Visit to Ankara, where he is holding high-level engagements with Turkish authorities.
According to Tinubu, his discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan centred on strengthening bilateral relations and translating diplomatic ties into real economic gains for citizens of both countries.
He noted that both leaders shared a common vision focused on expanding opportunities through increased trade, investment and job creation.
Tinubu revealed that Nigeria and Türkiye are working towards significantly increasing their trade volume, with both sides agreeing to address structural challenges that have previously hindered business growth.
The President said the talks were solution-driven and centred on areas of shared interest such as commerce, energy development, education, defence collaboration, as well as regional peace and security.
As part of the outcomes, Tinubu announced the establishment of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee, which will be responsible for implementing agreed initiatives and driving new investment inflows.
He explained that the committee is expected to stimulate industrial expansion, promote technology transfer and deepen private sector participation in both economies.
Tinubu also welcomed President Erdoğan’s positive assessment of Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, particularly in the energy and investment landscape, describing it as a boost to investor confidence.
He stressed that the reforms underscore Nigeria’s commitment to transparency, economic stability and long-term growth that benefits all segments of society.
On security matters, the President reaffirmed Nigeria’s role in advancing peace and stability across the African continent, noting that Türkiye’s experience in defence and counter-terrorism would enhance joint efforts to address emerging threats.
He disclosed that nine bilateral agreements were exchanged following the meetings, covering areas such as defence cooperation, education, media relations, diaspora engagement, trade facilitation, social development and institutional partnerships.
Reiterating Nigeria’s openness to global collaboration, Tinubu said the country remains ready to engage in partnerships that encourage innovation, remove trade barriers and foster shared prosperity.
He concluded by reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to inclusive economic growth, peaceful coexistence and confident engagement on the global stage.
