NFVCB to Honour Funke Akindele as Box Office Queen Following BTS Success

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has congratulated actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele on the massive box office success of her latest film, Behind The Scene (BTS), which has grossed over ₦2.4 billion and continues to play in cinemas nationwide.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the NFVCB confirmed plans to present Akindele with a Box Office Queen Award covering her achievements in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

The board’s Executive Director, Dr Shaibu Husseini, described the milestone as “another landmark moment for Nigerian cinema,” noting that it reinforced Akindele’s position as one of Nollywood’s most influential and commercially successful figures.

Husseini highlighted that Akindele has delivered record-breaking performances at the box office for four consecutive years, a rare feat in the industry. He said, “This level of consistency reflects creative excellence and a deep understanding of audience engagement and Nigeria’s evolving film business.”

Arrangements to present the award are ongoing, with plans to host the ceremony at a mutually convenient time. The Minister of Arts, Hannatu Musa Musawa, and top female executives are expected to attend, Husseini added.

The NFVCB also congratulated actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham on her directorial debut, Oversabi Auntie, which has surpassed ₦1 billion in box office earnings and ranks among Nollywood’s four highest-grossing films of all time.

“This is a historic and impressive entry. We celebrate both filmmakers as symbols of Nollywood’s growth, resilience, and global promise,” Husseini said, reaffirming the board’s commitment to recognising achievements that promote visibility, growth, and commercial sustainability in the audiovisual sector.
