Businesswoman Arraigned in Badagry for Alleged N1.14m Rice Fraud

The police on Friday arraigned a 42-year-old businesswoman, Aminat Taiwo, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court over an alleged N1.14 million fraud involving the supply of rice.

Taiwo, whose address was not disclosed, is facing a one-count charge of fraud. She pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Insp. Friday Mamoh, told the court that the offence was committed on May 6, 2025, at Opposite Beach Town in the Joseph Dosu area of Badagry, Lagos.

According to Mamoh, the defendant allegedly collected the sum of N1,140,000 from a complainant under the pretence of supplying 17 bags of foreign rice but failed to deliver the goods.

He said the defendant was later arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution.

The prosecutor added that the offence contravenes Section 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. J. Aina, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N400,000 with two sureties in like sum, ruling that one of the sureties must be self-employed.

The case was adjourned until Feb. 23 for mention.
