The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday celebrated Christmas with troops of Sector 1 Joint Task Force, Operation Fansan Yamma (OPFY), charging them to remain focused on their mission.
Shaibu gave the charge at a luncheon organised as part of activities marking the Christmas celebration.
He also urged the troops to maintain professionalism in the discharge of their operational duties.
Represented by the Chief of Administration (Army), Maj.-Gen. Isa Abdullahi, the COAS emphasised the need for heightened vigilance, especially during the yuletide period.
“I extend warm Christmas wishes to all officers, soldiers, civilian staff, and families of the Nigerian Army,” he said.
“This season invites reflection and thanksgiving as we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, emphasising love, sacrifice, compassion, and unity — values that resonate deeply within our Army.
“I salute those serving in various theatres during this festive season, whose sacrifices ensure our nation’s safety. Your commitment is profoundly appreciated.
“Under my leadership, I pledge to prioritise professionalism and personnel welfare. Our philosophy remains a focused transformation into a resilient force ready to fulfil our constitutional duties.”
He also commended the families of soldiers for their support and sacrifices, noting that their love and patience continued to strengthen the troops.
Shaibu further expressed gratitude to sister services, other security agencies, and host communities for their cooperation in maintaining peace and security.
“As we celebrate Christmas, let us embody the season’s essence through love and unity. Embrace 2026 with optimism and dedication as we tackle emerging challenges and uphold the honour of our service,” he said.
The Army chief urged the troops to celebrate responsibly, maintain security awareness, and honour fallen heroes, adding that unity should be strengthened as they remain focused on their mission in the New Year.
He also appreciated President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support, which he said had bolstered the operational readiness of the Nigerian Army.
Earlier, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division and Commander Sector 1, Operation Fansan Yamma, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, reminded the troops of the importance of force protection.
the COAS’ representative also visited Forward Operating Bases at Birnin Gwari, Tegina and Rijana, where he interacted with the troops.
