Egypt’s Pharaohs defeated Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2–1 in an international friendly played at the Cairo Stadium on Tuesday night, as both teams fine-tuned preparations for the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled to begin on Sunday.
Nigeria lined up in a 3-5-2 formation for the first time under head coach Eric Chelle and dominated early possession, pressing high and controlling the tempo in the opening exchanges. However, Egypt gradually grew into the game and took the lead midway through the first half through a swift counter-attack.
The Super Eagles remained organised and threatening from set pieces and were rewarded in first-half stoppage time when Zaidu Sanusi’s delivery from the left was headed home by Chidozie Awaziem to restore parity.
After the break, Chelle switched to a 4-4-2 formation, making several changes in personnel. Despite the adjustment, Egypt regained the lead following a goal that sparked controversy, with Nigerian players protesting an apparent offside decision that stood.
Egypt subsequently dropped deep to protect their advantage as Nigeria pushed for another equaliser. Tempers flared late in the game, with Chelle booked during protests over officiating decisions, including a waved-away handball appeal inside the Egyptian penalty area.
The Super Eagles will depart for Fés on Thursday ahead of their Group C fixtures against Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda, while Egypt will head to Agadir to prosecute their Group B matches.
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be held in Morocco from Dec. 21, 2025 to Jan. 18, 2026.
