Leaders, Statesmen Honour Former Information Minister Jerry Gana at 80, Celebrate Legacy of Integrity and National Service

Associates, political leaders, captains of industry and elder statesmen on Sunday night extolled the virtues of former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, as he celebrated his 80th birthday in Abuja.

The event, which featured the public presentation of a book titled “Jerry Gana: Stewardship and Integrity” written by Simon Musa, drew tributes from past presidents, vice-presidents, governors, lawmakers and party leaders who described Gana as a rare statesman whose life has been defined by service, integrity and loyalty to Nigeria.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in his remarks, hailed Gana as “a man of clean, clear ideas and conduct,” noting that his integrity had remained consistent despite the complexities of politics.
Obasanjo said Gana distinguished himself as a public servant who neither condoned wrongdoing nor compromised on principle.

“He is very thorough, intelligent and reliable. Whatever task you assign to him, he executes it with excellence. On behalf of my family and all who worked with you in government, we celebrate you and thank God for your life,” the former president added.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan also described Gana as a distinguished elder statesman who devoted decades of his life to national development in various capacities.
Jonathan said Gana’s life at 80 symbolised purposeful leadership and had continued to motivate generations.

“Your dedication, integrity and impact have shaped national discourse, guided public policy and strengthened democratic values,” Jonathan noted.

In his review of the 425-page book, former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo—represented by Prof. Yakubu Ocheni—commended the author for capturing Gana’s early life, public engagements and political evolution.
Osinbajo, however, observed that the book did not delve into how Gana maintained friendships across successive civilian and military administrations, nor did it highlight his advisory role during the third term agenda controversy.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki, described Gana as an institution whose credibility cut across academia, public service, politics and family life.
He said the “new PDP” envisioned a democratic system where integrity—like Gana’s—would be sufficient qualification for leadership.

“If you have a brand like Prof. Jerry Gana, that’s all you need to make it to the ballot in the new PDP,” Turaki said.

Former Zamfara governor, Sen. Abdulaziz Yari, represented by Sen. Tijani Kaura, urged distinguished guests to promote the book widely, while encouraging Gana to consider joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) to further serve the nation.

Also speaking, ex-Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State praised Gana for maintaining visionary leadership since 1983.
“Gana is God-fearing and dedicated. Nigerians must honour him. I look forward to celebrating his 90th birthday,” Aliyu said.

The highlight of the celebration was the cutting of the birthday cake by the celebrant, joined by former presidents, ministers, lawmakers and dignitaries.

In his response, an elated Gana expressed gratitude to all who graced the event. He appreciated the author, the organisers and guests for honouring him.
