2025 Sees Historic 22% Growth in South African Citrus Exports

South Africa’s citrus industry achieved unprecedented export growth in 2025, with shipments rising by 22 per cent compared with the previous season.

According to MENA, citing the Citrus Growers’ Association of Southern Africa (CGA), the total volume of citrus exports reached 203.4 million cartons, each weighing 15 kg.

The increase in yield was supported by favourable weather, the establishment of new fruit-bearing orchards, and enhanced farm management practices in water use and pest control.

The report also highlighted improvements in logistics, including port operations, which contributed to smoother exports.

Global demand for citrus, particularly oranges and lemons for juice production, also rose significantly.

Middle Eastern markets received 19 per cent of total exports, Asia accounted for 15 per cent, and Russia imported nine per cent.

The CGA noted that its Vision 260 strategy aims to grow annual export volumes to 260 million cartons by 2032, creating around 100,000 new jobs and boosting foreign currency inflows into South Africa’s economy.

By type, the strongest growth was seen in Valencia oranges – 61.8 million cartons (+26% year-on-year), mandarins – 53.5 million cartons (+28% vs. 2024), and lemons – 41.3 million cartons (+19% vs. 2024), reflecting the sector’s continued expansion and global competitiveness.
