ROSOWA advocates responsible driving culture during ember months

The President of the Road Safety Officers Wives Association (ROSOWA), Dr. Nafisat Shehu-Mohammed, has called on motorists to prioritise road safety and take full responsibility for their conduct while driving.

Shehu-Mohammed made the appeal during a town hall meeting organised by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Capital Territory Command, in Abuja on Thursday.

The meeting, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” emphasised the need for collective commitment to reducing road crashes, especially as vehicular movement increases during the ember months.

According to the ROSOWA president, ensuring safety on the roads requires shared responsibility and consistent awareness from all stakeholders.

“Road safety is a collective duty. Everyone must contribute to making our roads safe, not just during the ember months but as a lifelong practice,” she said.

Dr. Shehu-Mohammed highlighted the significant role of women in promoting road safety, noting that many handle family transportation duties and must ensure their vehicles are in good condition before every trip.

She urged motorists to avoid distractions, texting, or phone use while driving and warned against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“When we stay focused and avoid all forms of distraction, we not only protect ourselves but also safeguard the lives of others,” she said.

She further encouraged both male and female drivers to remain safety-conscious and committed to responsible driving throughout the festive season and beyond.

In his address, retired Deputy Corps Marshal (DCM) Jonas Agwu described distracted driving as a major cause of road crashes, advising motorists to pull over when tired and avoid multitasking while on the road.

“Drivers must minimise distractions, remain alert, and report reckless behaviour observed on the highways,” he added.
