GOC Assesses Security Operations, Lauds Troops at Kano–Katsina Border

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 1 Joint Task Force, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, has praised the courage and professionalism of troops engaged in a recent counter-banditry mission in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State.

This was contained in a statement released on Wednesday in Kano by Capt. Babatunde Zubairu, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade. He noted that the commendation came during an operational assessment visit to frontline troops stationed at the Farin Ruwa and Tsaure Forward Operating Bases in Shanono.

During the visit, the GOC urged the soldiers to remain disciplined, professional, and unwavering in their efforts to eliminate banditry and other forms of criminal activity in the region.

According to Zubairu, the visit followed a recent attack by bandits in Shanono on Nov. 2, 2025, which claimed the lives of two security operatives and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force.

He explained that the inspection aimed to evaluate the security landscape, address field challenges, and motivate personnel to sustain pressure against criminal elements.

Maj.-Gen. Wase interacted with the troops, addressed their concerns, and provided operational directives, assuring them of the continued backing of the Chief of Army Staff.

He expressed confidence in the troops’ ability to maintain momentum and secure lasting stability across affected communities.

The GOC also inspected a border corridor linking Kano and Katsina States — a known infiltration route for bandits — and urged the troops to stay alert while strengthening cooperation with other security agencies and local vigilante groups.

Zubairu mentioned that the operation involved forces drawn from the 3 Brigade, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, and Civilian Joint Task Force.

To round off his visit, Maj.-Gen. Wase paid a courtesy call on Governor Abba Yusuf at the Kano Government House, where both parties reviewed security strategies and reinforced their commitment to sustaining peace and order in the region.
