The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has set up a dedicated task force to conduct a nationwide audit of public and private buildings aimed at enhancing fire safety and compliance.
This was contained in a statement issued by the FFS spokesperson, Paul Abraham, on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to Abraham, the FFS Controller General, Samuel Olumode, explained that the initiative seeks to reinforce national fire prevention measures and strengthen the country’s capacity to respond to emergencies.
Olumode noted that the development highlights the service’s renewed focus on proactive risk management and curbing preventable disasters.
He stressed that the increasing rate of fire outbreaks in the country demands stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations across public and commercial facilities.
“The newly inaugurated task force will identify and classify buildings based on their fire risk levels, inspect facilities for compliance with safety standards, and provide recommendations to support enforcement and policy decisions,” he said.
Olumode urged members of the team—comprising senior officers—to carry out their duties with professionalism, transparency, and full commitment to protecting lives and property.
He also appealed to owners and managers of public, private, and high-rise buildings to fully cooperate with the task force during the nationwide exercise.
The FFS further disclosed that in 2024, Nigeria recorded significant losses to fire incidents, with properties worth billions destroyed—underscoring the urgent need for improved safety compliance.
Olumode reaffirmed the service’s commitment to ensuring safer communities and reducing the devastating impact of fire disasters across the country.
