Court Grants Divorce After 11 Years of Domestic Abuse Claims

An Area Court in the Centre-Igboro area of Ilorin has officially ended the marriage between Aminat Mustapha and Bolaji Gold following allegations of domestic violence and loss of affection.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Presiding Judge Mr. Toyin Aluko said the dissolution was granted after the husband consented to the separation, noting that there was no need to prolong the matter.

Aluko subsequently nullified the Islamic marriage and directed the petitioner to observe a one-month Iddah (waiting) period before entering another marriage.

The case was adjourned to Nov. 4 to address issues concerning the custody of the children.

Earlier, Mustapha informed the court that she no longer wished to continue with the marriage and sought custody of the children, along with ₦50,000 monthly upkeep and payment of their school fees by the respondent.

While Gold agreed to the dissolution, he objected to his estranged wife’s request for custody of their four children, aged 10, 9, 6, and 2, citing personal reasons.

The judge said the court would rule on the custody arrangement at the next sitting.
