Defence Chief applauds youth talent at Unity Basketball Championship

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has applauded the level of competition displayed by teams taking part in the ongoing Unity Basketball Championship in Lagos.

Musa, accompanied by the Special Guest of Honour, Maj.-Gen. Henry Tafida, Commander of the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps, witnessed the games at the National Stadium Indoor Sports Hall.

He lauded the athletes for their discipline and passion, stressing that their hard work and determination showcase the potential of Nigerian youths when given the right opportunities.

He pointed out that the country’s youthful population remains central to national growth, contributing through creativity, innovation, and global recognition in sports and other fields.

In his remarks, Tafida said the Defence Chief places strong value on sporting initiatives, noting that subsequent editions of the championship would attract even greater participation.

He further linked the tournament to Musa’s drive to engage all sectors in nation-building, explaining that the platform helps redirect youthful energy into productive ventures.

Maj.-Gen. Martins Obiora Enendu (rtd), a former Deputy Commandant of NAFRC, equally hailed the initiative as a worthy effort that promotes discipline and teamwork among young people.

He observed that sports serve as a constructive outlet for youths, nurturing values that strengthen society and contribute to sustainable development.

The tournament, which began on Sept. 30, features 12 teams drawn from South-West states as well as guest teams from Edo and Delta, and will run until Oct. 5.

At the end of the contest, the champions will receive N2 million, while the first and second runners-up will be awarded N1.5 million and N1 million, respectively, as incentives to encourage excellence in youth sports.
