A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Mr. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has cautioned critics and opposition figures against making derogatory comments about President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking with journalists on Sunday in Osogbo, Oyintiloye, who was a member of the defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), said it was unpatriotic for Nigerians to tarnish the image of the country and its leadership under the guise of politics.
He noted that repeated negative statements made by prominent individuals, especially on international platforms, were damaging Nigeria’s reputation abroad.
While acknowledging that the constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression, the former lawmaker stressed that such rights should not be abused through uncivil or inappropriate language directed at the nation’s leadership.
According to him, criticisms of government policies should be constructive and respectful, as the country’s global identity is being negatively affected by unfounded allegations and harsh remarks.
“There is no doubt that Nigeria is facing challenges, but the present administration is working hard to stabilise the situation. Making disparaging comments about our nation and its President abroad in the name of politics is not only harmful to our image but also detrimental to our progress.
“Our leaders deserve respect and dignity because they represent us globally. The way we portray our country and leadership reflects how our nationality is perceived around the world. Nigerians must learn from Americans who always say, ‘God bless America’, regardless of their circumstances,” he said.
Oyintiloye further warned that such negative remarks could have long-term consequences, noting that the internet never forgets.
He added that many Nigerians abroad already suffer harassment and unnecessary investigations due to stereotypes fueled by damaging narratives from within the country.
“Critics and opposition members must rise above politics and stop destroying the nation’s image. With prayers and collective effort, Nigeria will overcome its challenges, and we will all be proud to be identified as Nigerians anywhere in the world,” he concluded.
