SWAN Raises Concern Over Age Falsification at National Youth Games

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has voiced concern over allegations of widespread age falsification by states and officials during the recently concluded 9th National Youth Games (NYG) held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its National Convention, SWAN urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to adopt stronger mechanisms to curb age cheating. According to the body, strict enforcement of age categories is crucial to sustaining the objectives of grassroots sports development.

The association applauded the Delta State Government for successfully hosting the event and congratulated Team Lagos on emerging overall champions for the first time. It encouraged future host states to build on Delta’s achievements for improved organization.

SWAN expressed disappointment over the low participation of some states, including Ebonyi, Gombe, Zamfara, Borno, and Kebbi. It stressed that beyond empowerment, sports play a vital role in tackling insecurity and enhancing public well-being.

The association also lamented the lack of deliberate investment in human capital development, particularly in providing young people opportunities through sports. It appealed to state governments to ensure better access for media coverage of sporting events, including those within government facilities.

Looking ahead to the 2026 National Sports Festival in Enugu, SWAN urged early renovation and upgrading of facilities. It also reiterated its request for the inclusion of its Enugu Chapter Chairman in the festival’s Local Organising Committee, in line with past practice.

The body encouraged members to uphold professionalism in their work and to promote the inclusion of women in national sports coverage. It also called on members to prepare for SWAN’s 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary in October, while inviting corporate bodies and individuals to support the celebration.

Additionally, SWAN commended Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Hon. Amadin Enabulele, Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Wasiu Isiaka, and Nigeria Volleyball Federation President, Musa Nimrod, for their initiatives and sustained collaboration with the media in promoting sports development.
