Police Arrest Three Over Alleged Child Marriage in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three persons in connection with an alleged case of child marriage in Idoani, Ose Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, said in a statement on Tuesday that the incident occurred on August 28 around 6:53 p.m. and was foiled following a swift response by operatives.

According to him, the Divisional Police Officer in Idoani received a tip-off from a community leader that a 15-year-old girl was about to be married off to 52-year-old Asere Sunday, popularly known as “Santo.” Officers immediately stormed the venue, rescued the girl, and arrested the suspects.

Those arrested include the alleged groom, Asere Sunday, his son, Asere Kehinde (22), and the girl’s father, Ayoola Sunday. The victim was taken to the Reference Hospital, Akure, for medical examination and care.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, “Santo,” admitted offering money to the girl’s father in exchange for marriage, with traditional rites already being arranged. The father reportedly claimed financial hardship pushed him into the decision.

Ayanlade said the suspects are in custody and will be prosecuted, adding that the police will ensure justice is served. He urged parents and guardians to protect their children and avoid compromising their future due to poverty or other pressures.
