ABUJA – A total of 250 young chess players from schools across the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday took part in the Evolve 2.0 Children’s Chess Championship organised by the Royals Chess Academy.
The tournament, featuring Under-8, Under-10, Under-13 and Under-16 categories, was aimed at promoting grassroots sports development and identifying future chess grandmasters.
Convener, Mr. Johnson Enejison, said the competition was designed to develop critical thinking, discipline and resilience among children.
Winners in the Under-16 category included Goodluck Agbara (₦30,000), Afolabi Olutoye Jeremiah (₦15,000) and Emereole Lawrence (₦15,000). In the Under-13, Charles Oro emerged champion with ₦25,000, while Pedro Odogwu won the Under-10 with ₦20,000. Ojeaga Olumhense claimed the Under-8 title with ₦15,000.
Special recognition was given to Munachi Jason Emmanuel as the youngest participant, receiving ₦10,000.
The event drew praise from parents and coaches, who noted its role in improving focus, problem-solving skills and academic performance among children.
