Kogi Farmers Poised for Economic Growth Through Lagos Food Initiative

.The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to transforming the agricultural sector and improving farmers’ livelihoods through its partnership with Lagos State, designed to create a strong and efficient food supply chain between the two states.

In a statement on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, outlined the strategic measures already in motion to maximise the economic benefits of the initiative.

According to Fanwo, Governor Ahmed Ododo has, within two weeks of signing the agreement, set in place concrete actions to boost food production, upgrade infrastructure, and attract high-value investments to the state’s agricultural landscape.

“The governor didn’t just sign the agreement and return home. He rolled up his sleeves immediately to ensure the partnership delivers on its promises. With his efforts, Kogi farmers will earn more from their produce,” he said.

Fanwo noted that the Ministry of Agriculture has identified key areas with comparative advantages for specific crops, ensuring that every region contributes meaningfully to the value chain.

He stressed that Kogi is already a top producer of cassava in Nigeria and West Africa, and the government is determined to excel in other areas of food production.

“This is not just about claiming the title of the nation’s food basket — we are taking tangible steps to make it a reality,” Fanwo stated.

He commended Governor Ododo’s vision, highlighting that agriculture has been central to his development agenda from the start of his administration.

Fanwo also referenced major state-backed programmes, such as the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), which is rehabilitating rural roads to improve farmers’ access to markets, and the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) initiative, which is channeling investments into rural farming communities.

“Agriculture in Kogi is receiving unprecedented attention. Our youth and women from Ibaji to Gegu and Egbe are now actively engaged in the agricultural revival sweeping the state,” he added.

He also pointed out that improved security in rural areas has boosted farming activities and strengthened the confidence of local farmers.

Fanwo described the Food for Lagos Project as a game-changer that will not only improve food supply in Nigeria’s largest city but also promote wealth creation and economic growth in Kogi State.

“With sustained implementation, this partnership will make Kogi farmers wealthier and strengthen the state’s economy,” he concluded.

The Lagos State Government had, on July 23, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kogi, Niger, Taraba, and Ogun States during the launch of its ₦500 billion ‘Produce for Lagos’ initiative. The programme seeks to strengthen food supply chains and address rising food prices.
