Integrity is Key in Sports Leadership, Says NAWIS Founder

Prof. Florence Adeyanju, the founder of the Association of Nigeria Women in Sports (NAWIS), has encouraged members representing the association across various sports federations to uphold strong ethical values and remain resilient when faced with adversity.

Adeyanju emphasized that the core objective of NAWIS is to foster the growth and advancement of women and girls pursuing careers in sports. She also said that members serving within sports federations have a crucial role to play acting as mentors and role models to young girls, much like a nurturing guide.

“The core vision of NAWIS is to uplift and support women and girls in sports, both nationally and globally,” she said. “There is a spotlight on our work at NAWIS, and we must live up to the responsibility of making a positive impact. Standing united strengthens not just the individuals, but the entire association.”

Also speaking, the National President of NAWIS, Adefunke Suleiman, reaffirmed that the association was founded to enable women and girls to build sustainable careers through sports.

She noted that NAWIS was established to champion the interests of female athletes, protect them from all forms of harassment, and support them in achieving their professional aspirations.

“I deeply appreciate the unwavering support from our partners and stakeholders,” she said. “Special thanks go to the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, for his consistent backing, and the Director-General, Bukola Olopade, for his continued encouragement.”

Suleiman also expressed gratitude to the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for its support of the Super Falcons, which contributed significantly to the team’s success at the 2024 WAFCON.

She further underscored the need to prioritize the welfare of female athletes and women in general, describing President Bola Tinubu’s support as remarkably compassionate and impactful.
