Youth Group Calls for Stronger Consumer Protection in Telecom Sector

A youth organisation has called for stronger safeguards for consumers in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, raising concerns about data consumption patterns and subscription billing systems.

The Vice President (Administration) of the group, Mr Olatunji Adejuwon, made the appeal during an interview in Ibadan on Wednesday.

Adejuwon, a former Assistant Secretary-General of the National Association of Nigerian Students, urged regulators to step up monitoring of telecom and pay-TV operators across the country.

He emphasised the need for clearer and more transparent billing practices to ensure subscribers get fair value for services paid for.

According to him, many users continue to express frustration over rapid data depletion and unclear charging structures used by some service providers.

He called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and other relevant regulatory bodies to strengthen complaint resolution systems and enforce compliance with existing industry standards.

Adejuwon also encouraged civil society organisations, labour groups, and youth networks to push for policies that prioritise consumer rights and accountability within the sector.

He urged telecom operators to improve service quality, expand network reliability, and enhance overall customer experience.

He further noted that increased competition among service providers would help drive down costs and improve service delivery for consumers.

The youth leader also stressed the importance of policies that support local businesses and stimulate broader economic development.

He added that strengthening consumer protection frameworks remains essential to building a more stable and resilient economy.

Adejuwon reaffirmed the group’s commitment to advocating reforms that protect consumers and promote transparency in service delivery.
