Abuja, June 24, 2026 – The Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Jens Ole Bach Hansen, has said that democracy remains the strongest basis for achieving peaceful, inclusive and sustainable national development.
Hansen made the statement on Tuesday in Abuja during a reception marking Denmark’s 2026 Constitution Day celebration.
He noted that the event came shortly after Nigeria’s Democracy Day, describing both occasions as a reflection of the shared democratic values between the two nations.
Recalling Denmark’s constitutional history, he explained that the country adopted its first democratic constitution in 1849, although full democratic participation evolved gradually, with women gaining voting rights in 1915.
According to him, these developments have contributed to shaping Denmark into one of the world’s most stable, prosperous and egalitarian societies, supported by strong institutions and a high level of public trust.
He added that Denmark’s entry into the European Community in 1973 further deepened its commitment to democratic governance, cooperation and dialogue.
Hansen reaffirmed Denmark’s willingness to continue promoting democratic ideals alongside Nigeria, stressing the need for continuous improvement and strengthening of democratic institutions.
He also highlighted Denmark’s shared values with Nigeria in areas such as multilateral cooperation, respect for international law and adherence to humanitarian principles.
The ambassador recalled that Queen Mary of Denmark visited Nigeria in 2025, where she launched a partnership initiative focused on maternal health and engaged with stakeholders in Lagos and Abuja, including a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
He said the visit underscored Denmark’s strong interest in Nigeria and reflected the growing importance of bilateral relations between both countries.
Hansen further noted that current cooperation between both nations covers agriculture, maritime security, digital innovation, technology development and cultural exchanges.
He disclosed that Denmark would relocate to a larger embassy facility before the end of the year, describing it as a sign of long-term commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria.
He concluded by urging both countries to continue deepening their partnership, while celebrating shared values of peace, cooperation and human dignity.
