Kano, June 23, 2026 – The Kano State Government has directed the immediate suspension of the manager overseeing the Thomas Regional Water Scheme following allegations of sabotage and interference with efforts to improve water supply across the state.
The directive was announced in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, on Monday.
According to the statement, the suspension will remain in place while a full investigation is conducted into claims of vandalism and deliberate damage to government-installed facilities meant to address persistent water shortages.
He explained that recent inspection visits to both the Thomas and Ghari Regional Water Schemes revealed worrying conditions, despite ongoing rehabilitation projects.
The commissioner noted that facilities intended to serve three local government areas have remained inactive for years, with significant damage observed at the sites.
He added that almost all electrical wiring connected to generators and pumping systems had been removed, while a recently completed power installation at the Thomas scheme—yet to be officially commissioned—had already been vandalised.
During the inspection, it was also discovered that some security personnel assigned to protect the facility were reportedly using parts of the site for farming activities.
Following these findings, the commissioner confirmed that the scheme manager had been suspended pending investigation, stressing that anyone found culpable would face legal consequences.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to restoring and upgrading water infrastructure, including ongoing rehabilitation of the Chalawa and Tamburawa water schemes.
The commissioner also urged residents to take responsibility for safeguarding public infrastructure, noting that such facilities are meant for the benefit of all citizens.
