Gov. Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the winner of the Ekiti State governorship election held on Saturday after securing a decisive victory at the polls.
Oyebanji polled 319,224 votes to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr Wole Oluyede, who garnered 40,543 votes.
The result was announced on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti by the Chief Returning Officer, Mrs Adenike Oladiji, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure.
Oladiji stated that the APC candidate met all constitutional and electoral requirements and was therefore returned elected.
She disclosed that the state had 988,251 registered voters, while 384,949 voters were accredited across the 16 local government areas.
According to her, a total of 382,109 votes were cast, with 6,332 ballots declared invalid.
Reacting to the outcome, APC Collation Agent, Sen. Cyril Fasuyi, called on other contestants to work with the governor in advancing the development of the state.
He stressed the need for unity and sportsmanship among political actors, noting that elections naturally produce winners and losers.
Fasuyi said the focus should now shift to supporting efforts aimed at improving the welfare and prosperity of Ekiti residents.
A breakdown of the results showed that the APC maintained a strong lead across most local government areas, outperforming its rivals by wide margins.
The governorship poll recorded participation from several political parties, with the APC emerging victorious after securing the highest number of votes statewide.
The declaration of the result officially confirms Oyebanji’s return for another term as governor, following a commanding performance across the state.
