The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Jigawa State has called on drivers and other road users to reduce their speed during the rainy season to help prevent road crashes.
The Sector Commander, Mas’udu Matazu, made the appeal in Dutse on Wednesday, stressing the importance of careful driving in wet weather conditions.
He cautioned motorists against using worn-out tyres, noting that they increase the risk of brake failure and could lead to accidents resulting in loss of lives and property.
Matazu said the advisory was necessary to promote safer roads and reduce crash incidents across the state throughout the rainy period.
He further encouraged drivers to carry out routine vehicle inspections before setting out, ensuring that essential components such as brakes, tyres, lights, and windscreen wipers are in proper working condition.
According to him, motorists should slow down because wet roads are slippery and require extra caution, adding that driving below the speed limit is essential during rainfall.
He also advised drivers to increase following distance to about three to four seconds to avoid collisions, and to steer clear of sudden braking that could cause skidding.
Matazu stressed the importance of using headlights even during daytime for better visibility and warned against driving through flooded roads.
He urged drivers to avoid distractions such as mobile phone use while driving, keep both hands on the steering wheel, and remain fully alert on the road, saying safety should always come first.
