Rivers High Court Begins Annual Judicial Recess

Port Harcourt, July 16, 2026 – Judicial activities at the Rivers State High Court will temporarily pause as judges prepare to commence their annual vacation beginning July 20, according to an announcement by the state’s judiciary.

The information was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chief Registrar of the court, Mr David Ihua-Maduenyi.

Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, stated that regular court proceedings across the state’s judicial divisions would resume on Sept. 16 following the vacation period.

He explained that the annual break is provided for under Order 49, Rule 4(D) of the High Court of Rivers State Civil Procedure Rules, 2023, as amended.

According to the chief judge, all divisions of the High Court in the state will remain closed throughout the vacation.

He noted that the annual recess is a longstanding judicial practice intended to allow judges time to rest after months of handling court responsibilities.

Despite the suspension of regular sittings, Chibuzor-Amadi assured members of the public that arrangements had been made to address urgent and time-sensitive cases during the vacation.

He said designated vacation judges would be available to hear matters requiring immediate judicial attention, ensuring that litigants with pressing legal concerns are not left without recourse.

The chief judge added that the measure is aimed at maintaining access to justice while balancing the need for judicial officers to observe their annual break.

The vacation period remains a key feature of the judicial calendar and is regarded as an important mechanism for supporting the effective and efficient functioning of the courts.
