Sultan Confirms Start of 1448AH Islamic New Year, Sokoto Declares Holiday

Sokoto, June 16, 2026 – Muslims across Nigeria have commenced the Islamic New Year following the official declaration of Tuesday, June 16, as the first day of Muharram 1448AH by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar.

The announcement was conveyed in a statement issued in Sokoto by Prof. Sambo Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council.

Muharram is the opening month of the Islamic calendar and signifies the beginning of a new Hijrah year for Muslims worldwide.

In a related development, the Sokoto State Government declared Tuesday a public holiday to allow Muslim faithful in the state to mark the commencement of the new Islamic year.

The declaration was contained in a statement released by Abubakar Bawa, Director-General of Media and Publicity to Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

According to the statement, Governor Aliyu urged residents to use the occasion to offer prayers for enduring peace, stability and improved security in Sokoto State and across Nigeria.

He described insecurity as one of the major obstacles to national growth and development, stressing that addressing the challenge requires the cooperation of both government and citizens.

The governor noted that federal and state authorities have continued to support security agencies in efforts to combat banditry and other criminal activities.

He emphasized that ensuring safety and security is a collective duty that demands active participation from all well-meaning citizens.

Aliyu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing the necessary support for security agencies to enhance their operations and restore peace in affected communities.

Reflecting on the significance of the new Islamic year, the governor encouraged Muslims to engage in self-evaluation and spiritual renewal, taking stock of their achievements and identifying areas where improvement is needed.

He also urged the faithful to seek forgiveness from Allah, embrace righteousness and strengthen their devotion, noting that divine mercy remains available to those who sincerely repent.

The governor further pledged continued support for Islamic activities and religious programmes aimed at promoting moral values and peaceful coexistence within the state.

He extended his best wishes to Muslims in Sokoto and across the country, expressing hope that the new Islamic year would bring greater peace, prosperity and blessings to all.
