The Lagos State chapter of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) has urged a comprehensive reform of the operations of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), citing concerns over the conduct of some personnel on the roads.
In a statement issued on Monday in Lagos, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Ayodele Kazeem, acknowledged the importance of LASTMA in maintaining traffic order and ensuring road safety across the state.
He, however, expressed concern that the behaviour of some officers had fallen short of the professionalism expected of a modern traffic enforcement agency, noting increasing complaints from motorists.
According to him, there have been repeated reports of aggressive enforcement, arrests over minor infractions, and confrontations between officials and road users, which in some cases could have been handled with caution and warnings.
Kazeem further alleged that certain enforcement actions had, in some instances, contributed to avoidable accidents and heightened tension on the roads, calling such developments unacceptable in traffic management operations.
He stressed that no enforcement activity should endanger the lives of motorists or passengers, adding that Lagos requires a system that prioritises safety, professionalism and accountability.
The APM spokesperson therefore called for immediate reforms within LASTMA, including the introduction of body-worn cameras for all field officers.
He explained that the deployment of body cameras would enhance transparency, provide clear records of interactions between officers and the public, discourage misconduct, and help build trust in the agency.
Kazeem also suggested that officers should not be allowed to disable or interfere with recording devices while on duty, except under strictly defined regulations.
In addition, he advocated full digitalisation of LASTMA’s enforcement processes, including traffic violations, penalties and incident reporting, to reduce manual interference.
He argued that adopting digital platforms would help curb corruption, improve efficiency and ensure greater accountability in traffic administration.
He maintained that a modern city like Lagos must embrace technology-driven solutions that protect both enforcement officers and road users.
The statement added that discretionary enforcement practices and opaque procedures should be replaced with a more transparent system anchored on professionalism, accountability and respect for human dignity.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to advocating reforms aimed at strengthening public institutions and improving governance in the state.
