Group Urges FG to Uphold Federal Character for National Unity

Ilorin, June 13, 2026 – A legal practitioner, Mr Abdulganiyu Ahmed, has urged authorities at all levels to ensure strict implementation of the constitutional federal character principle, describing it as essential for strengthening democracy, promoting inclusion and fostering national unity.

Ahmed made the appeal during an interview in Ilorin, where he expressed concern over what he described as inadequate representation of some ethnic groups and regions in public affairs.

According to him, the absence of equal opportunities and inclusive governance continues to hinder democratic development and weaken the sense of belonging among many Nigerians.

He argued that certain ethnic groups and geopolitical zones are frequently perceived as minorities and, as a result, do not receive fair representation in government appointments, employment opportunities and elective positions.

Ahmed maintained that democracy thrives when all segments of society are given equal opportunities to participate in governance and national development.

He noted that exclusion and unequal treatment can create feelings of marginalisation, deepen divisions and undermine efforts to build a united nation.

The lawyer called for a balanced and equitable system that guarantees fair representation for all groups, regardless of size or geographical location.

He said such an approach would encourage national integration, reduce discrimination and create an environment where citizens feel adequately represented in the country’s political and administrative structures.

Ahmed also identified poor management of public resources as another factor slowing democratic progress in Nigeria.

He criticised what he described as a lack of accountability among some public office holders, alleging that resources intended for the welfare of citizens are often concentrated in the hands of a privileged few.

According to him, many Nigerians have yet to fully benefit from the dividends of democracy because public resources are not always distributed in a manner that reflects the needs of the broader population.

He stressed that leadership should be guided by discipline, transparency and a commitment to public service rather than personal interests.

Ahmed urged public officials to prioritise the welfare of citizens and ensure that national resources are utilised for the common good.

He added that greater accountability, fairness and inclusiveness in governance would help strengthen democratic institutions and enhance public confidence in the nation’s political system.
