Lagos, June 13, 2026 – The National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, has emphasised that protecting personal information and strengthening digital trust are essential for Nigeria’s democratic development and expanding digital economy.
In a Democracy Day message posted on the commission’s website, Olatunji urged citizens, businesses and institutions to embrace responsible data handling practices and stronger cybersecurity measures.
Olatunji’s Message
“Today, we honour the sacrifices of those who championed democracy and reaffirm our commitment to building a secure and inclusive digital future where every Nigerian can participate confidently.
As our nation continues to embrace digital transformation, we must collectively uphold the principles of responsible data processing, cybersecurity and digital trust.”
He noted that as the country increasingly adopts digital technologies, stakeholders must work together to create a secure and inclusive environment that allows citizens to engage confidently online.
Olatunji also reiterated the commission’s commitment to safeguarding Nigerians’ privacy rights while promoting confidence in the nation’s growing digital ecosystem.
Training Programme Receives Praise
Industry stakeholders commended the NDPC for expanding capacity building in the data protection sector through its Certified Data Protection Training and Certification Programme.
T&Y Information Management Services Ltd. described the commission’s sponsorship of training and certification for 1,000 participants as a significant contribution to Nigeria’s data protection landscape.
The company’s Principal Consultant, Mr Tokunbo Smith, said participants received learning materials, feeding and fully funded certification examinations under the programme.
He added that the initiative provided practical skills in data protection, privacy governance and information management.
Smith also praised the Institute of Information Management (IIM) for its handling of the online certification examinations. According to him, the institute responded quickly with technical support and remedial measures when some candidates experienced internet disruptions, ensuring that participants were not unfairly affected.
He said the collaboration between the NDPC, IIM, facilitators and participants contributed to the programme’s success and called for continued investment in data protection education and professional certification.
Smith added that stronger digital trust and privacy governance would help Nigeria build a more resilient and inclusive digital economy.
