Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo has called on Nigerians to play active roles in promoting peace, security and sustainable development across the country through patriotism, prayers and responsible citizenship.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Friday, the governor congratulated citizens on the occasion and encouraged them to reflect on the sacrifices made by individuals who fought for the nation’s democratic journey.
According to him, democracy extends beyond the conduct of elections, serving as a system that empowers citizens to influence the direction and future of their country.
He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending democratic values and institutions, noting that the freedoms and rights currently enjoyed were achieved through years of dedication, sacrifice and perseverance by committed patriots.
Ododo also advised citizens to shun actions capable of weakening democratic structures and instead embrace tolerance, dialogue, national unity and civic responsibility.
The governor stated that democracy remains the most reliable framework through which Nigerians can express their collective will, elect leaders and demand accountability from those in authority.
Referencing the views of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, he noted that democracy and good governance are vital tools for tackling poverty and driving national progress.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution and paid tribute to the late MKO Abiola, describing him as a symbol of the struggle that helped shape the country’s democratic landscape.
Ododo further appealed to citizens to continue supporting the nation and its leaders through constructive engagement and prayers, stressing that national progress can only be achieved through collective effort.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic ideals and fostering a society where justice, hope and economic prosperity are accessible to all.
