ASUU-NWU Urges Kano Govt to Implement 2025 Federal Agreement, Pay Staff Allowances

Kano, June 8, 2026 – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Northwest University Kano (NWU) Branch, has urged the Kano State Government and other key stakeholders to swiftly adopt and implement the provisions of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government concerning staff welfare allowances.

The appeal was contained in a statement jointly signed by the branch Chairperson, Mansur Sa’id, and Secretary, Yusuf Ahmed-Gwarzo, and made available to journalists in Kano on Monday.

The union expressed dissatisfaction over the prolonged delay in implementing the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and the Secretariat Assistance Allowance (SAA), both approved for university personnel under the 2025 agreement.

According to the statement, members of the union reviewed the issue during a congress meeting held on June 3 and observed that, despite expectations that implementation would begin in January, there had been little or no progress.

ASUU-NWU noted that several letters and communications had been sent to both the university management and the state government seeking action on the matter, but the efforts had yet to produce meaningful results.

The union stressed that staff welfare remains critical to maintaining stability, improving productivity, and ensuring sustainable growth within the university system.

It warned that delays in paying approved benefits place unnecessary financial pressure on workers while leading to avoidable accumulations of outstanding arrears.

ASUU-NWU therefore called on the state government and relevant authorities to take urgent steps toward the full implementation of both CATA and SAA.

The union maintained that fulfilling obligations to university employees is necessary for preserving industrial peace and strengthening the quality of higher education.

It also commended individuals and groups that have continued to engage government officials on matters affecting staff welfare, encouraging them to sustain and intensify their advocacy efforts.

Reaffirming its preference for dialogue and constructive engagement, the union expressed confidence that the concerns would be addressed promptly for the benefit of workers, students, and the broader university community.

The statement added that timely payment of the allowances would contribute significantly to a more stable academic environment and support the continued advancement of higher education in Kano State.
