A fire outbreak on Sunday damaged parts of the popular Anambra Supermarket complex along the Benin-Auchi Road in Benin City, prompting a swift response from emergency services that prevented the blaze from spreading further.
The incident occurred at about 9 a.m. and drew the attention of traders, residents and motorists as thick smoke rose from the commercial building.
Witnesses at the scene attributed the fire to a suspected power surge, saying the outbreak began at a time when many residents were either preparing for church services or already on their way to worship.
According to accounts from eyewitnesses, the flames spread rapidly through sections of the structure, attracting large crowds and causing concern among business owners in the area.
One resident, who declined to be identified, said the smoke became visible within a short time before the fire intensified and engulfed parts of the building.
Another witness, Grace Osagie, said traders and passersby initially made efforts to rescue goods and prevent the fire from reaching nearby shops before firefighters arrived.
She described the incident as frightening, noting that people worked frantically to move valuable items away from the affected area as the flames grew stronger.
Emmanuel Omoregie, who also witnessed the incident, praised firefighters for their prompt intervention, stating that their efforts helped stop the blaze from extending to adjoining buildings and businesses.
Similarly, Monica Eboigbe, who was travelling through the area on her way to church, expressed concern about recurring fire incidents linked to electrical faults.
She noted that the location is a busy commercial hub and commended emergency responders for acting quickly to contain the situation.
Confirming the incident, the Edo State Command of the Federal Fire Service said firefighters successfully brought the fire under control and immediately commenced measures to prevent any possible re-ignition.
Officials disclosed that no lives were lost in the incident, while assessments were ongoing to determine the full extent of property damage caused by the fire.
The successful containment of the blaze helped avert what could have been a major disaster in one of Benin City’s busy commercial districts, providing relief to traders and residents in the area.
