UATH secures contract for installation of 1.5 Tesla helium-free MRI machine

Gwagwalada (FCT), June 3, 2025 — The University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) has approved a contract for the procurement and installation of a 1.5 Tesla helium-free MRI scanner as part of efforts to improve its diagnostic capacity.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit of the hospital, Sani Suleiman, in Gwagwalada.

Speaking during the presentation of the award letter, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Thairu Yunusa, said the new imaging equipment, once installed, would significantly improve the hospital’s ability to detect and diagnose complex medical conditions with higher precision.

He noted that as a key tertiary health facility within the Federal Capital Territory, the upgrade would further position the hospital as a modern centre for advanced diagnostic and interventional services.

According to him, the new MRI system would greatly strengthen the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities and contribute to improved treatment outcomes for patients.

Yunusa also explained that the contract was awarded after a competitive bidding process conducted in line with due process and the Public Procurement Act, 2007.

In response, a representative of the contracting company assured the hospital management of prompt delivery and proper installation in accordance with the agreed specifications and timelines.
