Umuahia, June 2, 2026 — The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Abia State branch, has called off its planned indefinite strike following the release of orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Bonaventure Aguocha, who was abducted last month.
Dr Aguocha was kidnapped on May 24 while travelling to Umuahia from Imo State, sparking concern within the medical community and prompting the association’s initial decision to embark on industrial action.
The suspension of the strike was announced in a joint statement signed by the Chairman of the NMA in Abia State, Dr Ezenwa Ezuruike, and the Secretary, Dr Clement Ifenkoronye, and made available to journalists in Umuahia on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the surgeon regained his freedom on June 1 after spending nine days in captivity.
The association expressed gratitude for his safe return, noting that his release brought relief to his family, colleagues and patients.
It also commended the efforts of Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, his Imo State counterpart, Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and other security stakeholders involved in securing his freedom.
The doctors further appreciated members of the public for their prayers, solidarity and advocacy during the period of his abduction.
While welcoming Aguocha’s release, the association strongly condemned the repeated targeting of medical professionals, warning that such incidents were becoming increasingly alarming.
It referenced unresolved cases of attacks on healthcare workers, including that of Professor Iweha, which has remained pending since 2020, stressing that such threats undermine healthcare delivery and weaken morale among professionals working under challenging conditions.
The association called on both federal and state authorities to urgently improve security for healthcare workers and health facilities across the country.
It also urged a thorough investigation into the abduction and the prosecution of those responsible to serve as a deterrent to future attacks.
Following Aguocha’s release, the association said it had implemented its congress resolution to suspend the planned strike immediately.
It reaffirmed its commitment to healthcare delivery in Abia State and pledged continued collaboration with government and security agencies to ensure a safer working environment for medical personnel.
The association also wished the abducted surgeon a full recovery from the physical and psychological trauma of his ordeal.
