Lt.-Col. S. L. Lawan, the Commanding Officer, 15 Field Engineer Regiment of the Nigerian Army, Topo, Badagry, has assured the people of Badagry of security.
He said that soldiers at the regiment would continue to act professionally and protect lives and property in the area, irrespective of tribe or religion.
Lawan gave the assurance when he paid a courtesy visit to the Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1, in his palace on Tuesday.
According to Lawan, the military is non-partisan and apolitical, and will do everything possible to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity against external aggression.
The commanding officer said that the purpose of his visit was to understand Badagry’s security landscape, get ideas and receive the blessings of the traditional ruler.
“I am here in Akran Palace to show respect for the foremost traditional ruler.
“I believe that my first assignment in Badagry is to come here and receive your royal blessings.
“Security of lives and property of the people of Badagry is my responsibility, and I will ensure this.
“I believe that it is only with peace and unity that development can be achieved in all spheres of life,” he said.
He also promised to maintain mutual understanding between the regiment and its host community.
Responding, the traditional ruler thanked the commanding officer for the visit.
He said that a peaceful atmosphere in Badagry was important to boost social and economic activities.
He urged the officer to ensure that soldiers at the regiment would be live up to expectations, urging that they should not create any tension within Badagry communities.
He prayed God to protect the commanding officer.
Chief Tunde Giro, the Depegan of Badagry, said at the event that Badagry people
were happy to welcome the lieutenant colonel.
He urged Lawan not to fail in his promise to provide security for Badagry people.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new commanding officer presented a plaque and other gifts to the royal father during the visit.
