The Lagos State Police Command has urged residents to disregard a viral video alleging the recent arrest of Fulani men with arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, describing the footage as outdated and misleading.
The clarification was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi.
According to her, the video being widely circulated online is not connected to any recent security incident in Ikorodu or elsewhere in Lagos State.
Adebisi cautioned members of the public against sharing unverified content, noting that the spread of false information could trigger unnecessary panic and anxiety among residents.
She explained that the footage relates to an incident that occurred more than three years ago and should not be interpreted as reflecting the present security situation in the state.
The police spokesperson appealed to residents to ignore the video and verify information before sharing it, stressing that misleading reports have the potential to erode public confidence and disrupt peace.
She also warned social media users and content creators against publishing alarmist or unconfirmed claims capable of causing public unrest.
According to Adebisi, individuals found intentionally disseminating false information or fake news would face investigation and possible prosecution under relevant laws.
She further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, had directed the continued deployment of personnel and operational resources to strategic locations across Lagos.
The deployment, she said, covers identified flashpoints as well as major entry and exit routes to enhance security and public safety.
Adebisi noted that the measures were being carried out in collaboration with other security and safety agencies operating in the state.
She reassured residents and visitors that adequate security arrangements remain in place to protect lives and property, encouraging them to go about their lawful activities without fear.
The spokesperson also called on the public to remain alert and report suspicious individuals, movements or activities to security agencies.
She emphasised that credible and timely information from residents continues to play a vital role in preventing crime and strengthening security across Lagos State.
