A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Nyesom Wike and led by Abdulrahman Mohammed has dismissed reports suggesting that another group within the party is preparing to endorse former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, the faction described the claim as false, misleading and capable of creating unnecessary political tension.
He stressed that no convention or endorsement process of such nature had been approved or scheduled by any recognised organ of the party.
Mohammed explained that the PDP had already conducted its statutory primary elections for all major positions, including presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state assembly tickets, in line with the Electoral Act, INEC guidelines and the party’s constitution.
He urged party members and the general public to disregard what he termed unauthorised reports, insisting that they were aimed at causing confusion within the political space.
“The party categorically states that no convention, meeting or endorsement process has been approved or authorised by any legitimate structure of the PDP,” he said.
He further called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to distance himself from the development, saying such clarification would help protect both his personal integrity and the credibility of the democratic process.
The faction also urged security agencies to investigate those behind the circulation of what it described as false information.
According to Mohammed, the party remains committed to internal democracy, due process and adherence to the rule of law, adding that it would not tolerate the misuse of its name for unauthorised political activities.
He advised the public to rely only on official party communication channels for accurate updates on its affairs.
Reports had earlier indicated that another PDP faction planned to hold a convention in Abuja to endorse Jonathan for the 2027 presidential race, while also affirming former lawmaker Sandy Onor as its consensus candidate.
No official statement has been issued by Goodluck Jonathan regarding any intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
