Entertainment icon and social activist Charles Oputa, widely known as CharlyBoy, has continued to stir excitement among fans as he releases excerpts from his forthcoming memoir titled “999”.
The veteran entertainer shared a teaser on social media on Friday, hinting at the official unveiling of the book in Lagos and reflecting on the themes and experiences captured in the work.
In the teaser, he wrote: “Lagos never sleeps but it remembers everything. I watched him scream when others whispered. I watched Nigerians argue with him, fear him, laugh at him, become him. I watched the city pulse with his energy.”
He further added: “The tapes of the past still spin in the shadows of streetlights. Some people fade quietly like a whisper in the blackout. Others leave fingerprints on the entire city, impacts that never wash away. ‘999’, the memoir of Charly Boy, coming soon.”
Following the post, CharlyBoy confirmed that the official public presentation of the memoir, which includes a foreword by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is scheduled to hold on July 31 in Lagos.
He described the book as a deep reflection of his personal journey, emotional experiences, convictions, and the lessons gathered over the years.
According to him, the memoir seeks to move beyond the public image of “CharlyBoy” to reveal a more personal and unfiltered account of his life, marked by rebellion, resilience, and growth.
“This book is not just a biography; it is a battleground. It carries the ugly, the bad and the very good. It is a collection of lived experiences that would challenge even the boldest screenwriters,” he said.
He added that his life has been defined by choosing individuality over conformity and consistently challenging societal norms.
“For over 40 years, I used the CharlyBoy brand to confront hypocrisy, provoke thought, awaken consciousness and give voice to the silenced. I was controversial, yes. Rebellious, certainly. But also unapologetically real,” he said.
The septuagenarian noted that “999” offers an in-depth look into his life journey, aiming to reveal the person behind the widely known CharlyBoy persona.
